Finding appropriate Halloween costumes for teachers can be tricky! Over the years, I’ve worked in some schools that allowed teachers to wear costumes as long as they weren’t at all scary. Not gonna lie — I kind of love playing dress up, but I don’t have a ton of time to put something together. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite Halloween teacher costumes from the past!
Table of Contents
1. Spider Halloween Costume for Teachers
This is probably the most complicated one to create on the list, but it’s not that hard and it’s a fun one to wear.
What you’ll need to re-create:
- Black pants
- Black top
- 3 black pairs of kids tights (see notes below)
- Fiber fill stuffing to stuff the tights for your spider legs
- String to attach those new spider legs to your wrists
- Sewing kit, safety pins, or fabric tape/glue
- Comfy, wide, black knit headband for your compound-eye headband
- Lots of googly eyes for your compound eyes
- Hot glue gun to attach eyes to headband (and possibly to make web-like strands on the back of your top (not pictured above)
For the legs:
- Cut one pair of tights in half. You’ll use these sort of like full-length gloves to turn your hands into legs. You will probably also need to cut out the feet so you can use your hands easily throughout the day.
- Do not cut the other two pairs of tights. Stuff them both with polyfill. Fold over the tops of the tights and safety pin one pair to the right side of your top and the other to your left side.
- Tie strings around each stuffed leg and around your own wrists. This way your “legs” will move as your arms do. (It might be easier to tie the strings before you attach the legs to your top.
These tights plus your own arms and legs = 8 spider legs.
For the compound eyes:
I bought a very stretchy, very wide headband from Target or Walmart, along with some big googly eyes. I like the knit ones usually worn in the winter to keep your ears warm. Simply hot glue as many eyes to your headband as you’d like & you’re ready to go!

2. Flower or Frog Halloween Costumes for Teachers
I love how simple this one is!
What you’ll need to re-create:
- Green dress or shirt
- Green kids’ tutu to wear around your neck (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
- Frog hat or flower headband (you can even just make tissue paper flowers to place in your hair)

3. Pink Elephant Halloween Costume for Teachers (or any color you want!)
Pardon the grainy image from my childhood! Clearly this is from before my teaching days! 😂I never ended up re-using this one as a teacher, but I think it would work well.
What you’ll need to re-create:
- Pink outfit (or any color of your choosing)
- Elephant trunk
- Fairy wings to wear on your head backwards as elephant ears (you may need to purchase some elastic or a stretchy headband to attach the ears to to make this work)

4. Tooth Fairy Halloween Costume for Teachers
This is my childhood version. I could not find a picture of the teacher version, but only the base outfit changed since grown-up me is NOT about wearing leotards anywhere, let alone work!
What you’ll need to re-create:
- Fairy wings (Did you spot that these are the same fairy wings I used as elephant ears? Score for re-purposing!)
- Wand
- A tooth-fairy accessory (E.g. toothbrush spray-painted gold and fashioned into a necklace, large tooth, tooth pouch, large tooth brush, etc.)
- Tutu (optional)
- Roller skates (optional – if you think fairies should glide & you aren’t worried about breaking bones!)
- Wear with outfit you’d like! When I recreated my childhood costume as a teacher, I just wore a sparkly, dress that I got from a thrift store. It looked like a 50s prom dress to me & worked perfectly for a fairy, IMO.

5. Greek Goddess Halloween Costume for Teachers
Boo! Hahaha! 👻 No, that pic above is NOT my Athena costume, and I did NOT wear that to school! 😬But that wig I’m wearing was purchased for my Athena costume, which was perfect for the year I taught Ancient Civ. (the year before this pic was taken).
Frustratingly, I couldn’t find my photo of my Athena costume, but I know there’s an actual print photo in my house somewhere. If & when I find it, I will add it to this post.
I can tell you I bought a cheap Greek Goddess costume online. Since we know all costumes out there seem to only be available in a “sexy” version, I had to sew up the cleavage and leg slit drastically to make it school-appropriate, but it was easy & quick to do. I also had to wear a white cami and slip underneath because boy, was the fabric cheap!
What you’ll need to re-create:
- White dress
- Sandals
- Gold accessories (optional)
- Wig (optional)
Here are a couple of options I found on Amazon. I think the costume below would need just a bit of sewing or a white tank top underneath. It doesn’t appear to have the leg slit, thankfully!
