As I was preparing for this blog post, the number of Halloween STEM activities I had in mind just…kept….growing… like some kind of terrifying creature from beyond! 😂

Bone Bridge STEM Challenge

What kids do: Build a “bone” bridge for lengthstrength, or capacity. Great for forces and structures.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Skeletal system, bridges/transportation, forces.
  • Materials: Cotton swabs + basic makerspace supplies.
  • Time guide: 45–60+ min (it’s fine to stop early for reflection).

Notes: Students will take as much time to build, test, & share as you give them. Don’t be afraid to stop the build before they finish to discuss & reflect to that point.

Wings Wanted STEM Challenge

Wings Wanted Bat Halloween STEM Activity Materials - paper, scissors and tape

What kids do: Design bat-wing paper planes for distance, accuracy, or trick shots.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Bats & flight (pair with Stellaluna).
  • Materials: Paper & scissors (tape optional).
  • Time guide: 30–60 minutes.

What kids do: Invent a never-before-seen creature to demonstrate adaptations, habitats, heredity, and more.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Pure life science tie-ins; not seasonal.
  • Materials: Newspaper & tape (minimum) up to full makerspace (see image bottom-left)
  • Time guide: 60+ min (it’s fine to stop early for reflection).

Pumpkin Pedestals STEM Challenge

What kids do: Build a pedestal/platform that suspends 10 “pumpkins.”

  • Non-Halloween angle: Fall harvest; generic weights (paper balls/blocks).
  • Materials: Makerspace supplies; candies can be subbed with paper balls.

What kids do: Design a dish for Lou the monster’s spare eyeballs—safe, clean, and easy to find!

  • Non-Halloween angle: Monster tie-ins with picture books; or generic “storage dish” challenge.
  • Materials: Makerspace supplies; eyeball ping-pong balls (Dollar Tree) or any balls.
  • Time guide: 45–60+ min (it’s fine to stop early for reflection).

Pirate Ship STEM Challenge

What kids do: Build a ship with a sail to carry as much “gold” as possible.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Pirates anytime; Sept 19 = Talk Like a Pirate Day.
  • Materials: Hull materials (foil, clay, waxed cardboard, etc.) + coins (or base-ten blocks/pennies).

What kids do: Build a device to harvest a field of pumpkins efficiently.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Fall harvest/automation engineering.
  • Materials: Makerspace supplies; pumpkins can be paper balls/blocks.

Quick Build: Catch & Release

What kids do: Design a device to safely trap a spider and release it outdoors.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Everyday problem-solving.
  • Materials: Pipe cleaners, index cards/cardboard, tape (sub as needed).
  • Time guide: 15–20 min (add time for reflection).

Halloween STEM Activity #12:
Quick Build: Throne of Bones

What kids do: Build a throne “made of bones,” ≤6 in tall with a 2 in seat.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Skeletal system or picture books about skeletons.
  • Materials: Cotton swabs, pipe cleaners, index cards, tape
  • Time guide: 15–20 min (add time for reflection).

Halloween STEM Activity #13:
Quick Build: Bat Branch

What kids do: Create a tree that supports at least one hanging bat.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Bats & life science; pair with Stellaluna.
  • Materials: Pipe cleaners, index cards/cardboard, tape
  • Time guide: 15–20 min (add time for reflection).

Speak-Listen-Draw Communication

What kids do: Practice giving/receiving directions to recreate a mystery picture—great for the 4C “Communication.”

  • Non-Halloween angle: Use original math/prepositions version or student-made drawings.
  • Materials: Paper & pencil and print cards.
  • Time guide: 10–20 min (swap roles at least once).

Halloween STEM Activity #15:
See-Notice / Think Wonder

What kids do: Observe a picture, capture what they notice and wonder—mindful starts that spark inquiry.

  • Non-Halloween angle: Use the Invertebrates set or any science image bank.
  • Materials: Project on screen or printouts; no extra supplies.
  • Time guide: 3-5 (10 min with share-out).

Halloween STEM Activity #16:
STEM Improv

What kids do: Randomize an object, material, and function for rapid design prompts—336 combinations!

  • Non-Halloween angle: Choose fall or original STEM Improv sets.
  • Materials: None required (screen/print work).
  • Time guide: 10–15 min (+ share).

What kids do: Debate Would You Rather prompts from maker/user perspectives and choose tech to “give up.”

What kids do: Compare two solutions to a similar problem; list strengths, weaknesses, and research questions.

8 Ways to Use…

What kids do: Brainstorm eight different uses for everyday objects—encourage varied verbs to stretch creativity.

What kids do: Choose any (spooky) picture book, pause at a key problem, and design solutions. You can skip the build if short on time.

  • Materials: Book or read-aloud link; optional makerspace materials for building.
  • Time guide: Fully flexible; run as a discussion/sketch-only session if needed.
