Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM Challenge: Creature Catcher
In this Halloween STEM activity students work in partners or groups against a criteria and constraints list to design a device to catch as many “creatures” as possible.
While spider web STEM designs definitely come to mind, there are many ways to catch a creature! Let your students’ imagination and creativity shine by leaving the challenge open-ended.
Not doing Halloween STEM activities this year?
If Halloween activities are a no-go in your classroom, no problem! You can use this to start off a unit on spiders, food chains/webs, energy pyramids and more!
Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM Challenge
The Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM activity is collaborative, brain-busting work disguised as fun! This STEM challenge goes beyond Halloween. Connect it to your science lessons on skeletal system, bridges/transportation, and/or forces (specific ideas provided in the resource).
The basic idea: Students work in partners or groups against a list of criteria and constraints to build a bridge for length, strength, or capacity using simple materials.
Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM Challenge: Ghosts in the Graveyard
In this Halloween STEM challenge activity, students build ghost pulleys. The basic idea: Students work in partners or groups against a criteria & constraints list to create a ghost transporter that lifts cotton ball “ghosts” from the ground to the top of a pulley. (For younger students, the teacher will set up the pulley; for older students, the teacher will provide materials and students will include the pulley and attachment as part of their designs.)
Not doing Halloween STEM Activities? No problem!
This resource comes with a Grapes in the Vineyard version, so you can use this any time of year, without Halloween references.
Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM Challenge: Treat Toss
Students build a Treat Toss candy catapult in this Halloween STEM challenge activity. The basic idea: In partners or groups, students work against a criteria and constraints list to build a low-energy machine to toss treats. The teacher chooses from one of two challenge goals: maximum launch distance and/or target-accuracy.
This challenge is a great introduction to simple machines, particularly levers!
⭐️A candy-only, non-Halloween version of the handouts is included for those not doing Halloween STEM activities this year.
Bone Bridge® Halloween STEM Challenge: Wings Wanted
This Halloween STEM activity will keep your kids engaged & learning! Not doing Halloween activities this year? No problem! Just add this to a science unit on bats, life science, the physics of flight, or as a supplement to Stellaluna.
Basic Premise: In this Halloween STEM challenge activity, students design and engineer a new set of bat wings, with the goal being to achieve maximum flight distance and/or accuracy. You can even throw in style points, if you like! It’s a paper airplane challenge with a twist!
